It's been a long time since I've been in a toy shop, but with my first grand-daughter Sophie coming up to 20 months old, and therefore approaching her first proper Christmas (old enough to understand a little of the excitement), I've been back in the Early Learning Centre checking out what's on offer.
The temptation is to buy toys that are too old for her (they are more interesting), and also go for more natural wooden toys than a lot of the noisy electronic stuff that seems to be on sale in some of the stores.
I suspect that we'll get more pleasure out of buying the bits and pieces than she will get playing with them. But we'll have fun anyway. I wonder if I can get away with buying her a large Scalextrix set?

My granddaughter Sophie, now 18 months, has suddenly become a fan of Nellie the Elephant, that old stalwart of Children's Favourites back in the 50s and 60s.
She seems to enjoy seeing me put the old vinyl record of the turntable (a novel enough occurrence these days), but she absolutely loves me dancing around the room with her as (for the umpteenth time, usually) we celebrate Nellie's escape from the circus, and going off the jungle where the "head of the her was calling far, far, away".
And I like it too. It's terrific exercise.
