This is the last entry for the 'What I had for Dinner Last Night' Looking back over the blog has been interesting (well for me). Spaghetti Bolognese still holds the number 1 spot but the new discovery of the South African Lamb Potjie is rapidly climbing to number 2.

Out last night celebrating the birthday of Sandy S, our very own showbiz kitten. Ate in a well established and stylish Indian restaurant in Bromley, Kent called the Tamasha. Chose our own starters but left the choice of the main courses to the owner, who we know. The highlight was a slow cooked lamb dish. The lamb almost falls apart and is in a thick, dark, highly spiced sauce.

Last night was smoked haddock in a tomato, bacon, onion, prawn and white wine sauce mixed at the last minute with oven baked saute size potatos. May sound odd but the contrasting textures work well. Think Sweet and Sour pork. A totally inappropriate St Emillion to drink with it but it was very good.

Dinner for two so a spaghetti bolognese topped with fresh parmesan, I never tire of this dish. A very robust borgueil, loire red to go with this. If you see a borgueil try and get the St Nicholas, which I think is a domain in borgueil

As my daughter and her partner are staying with us while their kitchen is replaced meals this week are bigger and slightly different. So it was roast belly pork with roast potatos, stir fried cabbage and gravy. The belly pork was delicious a 2kg piece heavily scored cooked on a bed of onion with soy sauce, brown sugar and sesame oil. Cooked at 180c for about 2 hours. Lots of saly on the skin to make great crackling

Lamb potjie last night. This is a South African dish with lamb and butternut squash. There are many recipes for this, do a search on the internet. It is like a pot au feu where you can pretty much throw in anything like cabbage, carrots, potato or peppers.

Last night was shallow fried skate wings with home made oven baked chips. The secret of this being an enjoyable meal is that the skate must be very fresh. If you are buying skate reject any that has a smell of ammonia, its off and will taste unpleasant.

Went for a walk yesterday with friends and had an early dinner at thier house. A great meal and just right after being out for 2-3 hours in the country. Main course was beef pie made with short crust pastry, baked beans and mash with leeks. Followed by a delicious apple and blackberry crumble with custard and a cheese to finish. A great meal

Bourbon chicken with boiled rice. This is a quasi chinese dish that involves marinating chicken thighs with soy sauce, garlic, ginger, sesame oil and bourbon whiskey. After being marinated the thighs are roasted for about 45 minutes. We substituted Spanish brandy for the whiskey

All the family were round last night so dinner was a huge game casserole. Two jointed pheasants, a jointed rabbit and wild boar and venison sausages cut into small pieces. Pudding was a cheesecake with pistashio base and honey and pistashio decoration. Cheese course included Manchengo, Quenby Hall Stilton, mature Gouda, extra mature Cheddar, Brie de Meaux and Camembert. All beautifully partnered by a 2000 Rioja

We went to friends for Christmas day and there are no prizes for guessing what we had. It was an enormous traditional four course Christmas meal. Pate, prawns, smoked salmon, avocado and melon to start. A fantastic Copas free range, bronze feathered turkey with all the trimmings. Then Christmas pudding followed by cheese. Also great Bordeaux wines and port with the cheese.

Not strictly dinner last night, had about 25 friends around for the evening. To make a contrast between meals upcoming over the next few days the food was sausage and mash. Qauntities were 5Kg of mashed potato with butter and onion, topped with sliced tomato and double gloucester cheese, 2Kg of boston baked beans, 2 litres of guiness based onion gravy and about 6Kg of sausages. Lamb and mint, wild boar, pork with spices and nuts, cumberland and pork and apple.

Spaghetti bolognese again last night but made with minced venison rather than minced steak. The venison mince does not shrink and is very rich so it is a very filling meal. It was a drinking night so a 2002 St Emilion was a great partner to the powerful flavours in the sauce.

Last night was a brace of roast pheasant. A 2000 Rioja made this an even better meal. If you have not had pheasant try it. Butchers do not hang them so they have a fresh gamey taste. If you can remember what turkey and chicken used to taste like then it is the same as pheasant. Expect to pay £5-£8 for two. If the pheasant is large, 1.2kg or above, then it will be enough for two. Watch out for the lead shot
