Volunteering

Getting older may mean you have a little extra time on your hands or, at least, that you have more choice in how you spend your time.  Voluntary work can be a stimulating and rewarding experience.   Here you will find many examples of voluntary opportunities.  Working with the young or old, individually or on a project, at home or overseas.  You will find guidance here on where your individual skills and experience could be utilised and valued.

For those that have already enjoyed an experience as a volunteer,  please tell us your story so that others can be encouraged to get started. Email the AMG Editor at editor@aboutmygeneration.com

People and PlacesGap years for grown ups

Volunteering overseas or a ‘grown up gap year’ may sound like a terrific adventure but, inevitably, there are pitfalls to watch out for.  As the trend to combine a holiday of a lifetime with ‘making a difference’ has risen, so have the number of complaints from travellers who have been thoroughly disappointed by the experience.

We talk to Sallie Grayson, co-founder of People and Places about the problems that can occur with voluntary placements overseas and also to Naomi Kemeny and Bill Brierley about their very positive experiences of volunteering in Nepal and Africa. To read more click here...

Adopt a Station

Adopt a Station

Get involved in your community

East Midlands Trains is looking for volunteers to get involved in caring for and taking a pride in their local railway station.

Through the Station Adoption Scheme they are hoping to find individuals and groups to become the ‘eyes and ears’ of their local station and to help ensure that the station is well presented and looked after.

Anyone can volunteer to adopt a station whether they are an individual, a community group or a rail enthusiast. In return for  a little of their time and lots of their enthusiasm East Midlands will provide a complimentary travel pass for use on their services or a complimentary return ticket for two to London with East Midlands Trains.

To find out more about the scheme click here...
