The Editor's Diary

Chris the EditorUpdated 5th August 2009

In this edition has she been listening to the Government by doing five a day? She meets a Number One at Number One and this Number One is going Dutch with her. It looked like a hospital and the people inside were dressed like medics but where were the patients? Buck House should have been renamed Duck House on the day she drove past it because that was all it was fit for. It was then on to listen to some magical folk tales from the Emerald Isle and part of the magic was being transported there for three days. Enthused by a demonstration, she went somewhere new and exciting - the kitchen! On the home front she buys a special present for her husband's birthday, it's not a paltry gift but does cost chicken feed. And finally she spents some time with some very buzzy people in a hive of activity.

Travel writer, broadcaster and long-time presenter of TV’s Wish You Were Here programme, John Carter shares some of his favourite Mediterranean islands

John takes a nostalgic journey to his ‘dream islands’ remembering the days when airports were few and far between and you reached these islands by ferry boat.  Although much easier to reach now, John finds that, if you get off the beaten track Samos and Crete are still dream island destinations.

Not so Little BritainNot so little Britain

Obesity in Britain has trebled in the last 20 years and one in four British adults is now considered clinically obese. Research has revealed that the majority of Brits think that losing weight requires as much willpower as giving up smoking, believing that they are actually addicted to the quantities of food they eat, even though they know that it can be detrimental to other aspects of their health.

Psychotherapist Jane Firbank discusses the reasons why we overeat and suggests ways in which those wishing to lose weight can overcome their eating addiction and control their appetite.

Peter Morrell, Food and Drink Editor of AMG reports on the latest liquid surprises and delights

Updated 1st August 2009

In this month's edition he is in a fair city and goes to see the Boys from the Black Stuff, but the catch phrase is not 'Gizza Job' but 'Gizza Drink', which makes him feel on top of the World. He meets a little fellow from down under with a spring in his step so strong that it has taken him to the top of the charts. Life continues to come up Rosés, including a version of a beer covered last month. And this time drinking is all in a good cause, in fact it's as easy as ABC. He is evoking the spirit or even the beer of the East with the next two brews he samples and although these drinks are popular at Full Moon parties fortunately he wasn't howling. And finally, with 'Take me home, country roads' by John Denver echoing in his ears, he was back and sampling some of the best that this U.S. State can offer.

MenopauseAm I going mad or is this just the menopause?

For a supposedly natural process, the onset of the menopause can be quite a disturbing experience. No wonder many women of a certain age are left feeling confused and desperate for reassurance and advice.

In an ideal world women should be able to talk through their anxieties with their doctor but, in reality, only a fortunate few will get the help they need.

Another way would be to get hold of a copy of a book published by Norma Goldman, an expert in all matters menopausal.  Entitled The Menopause: Ask the Experts, it is packed from cover to cover with practical advice gleaned from the experience of a cross section of real-life women.

Musical InstrumentPicking up the pieces after a Life Change?

Consider taking up a musical instrument

Life is constantly changing. We move through different phases in life and adapt as best we can. Redundancy, divorce, separation, death of a loved one can all leave a void in our lives. You may be recovering from an operation or find yourself less mobile.  And even if you are approaching retirement as fit as a fiddle, you may still find the lack of routine and separation from your work colleagues a challenge.

Finding a new hobby can help fill a void and give you something stimulating to focus on that has continuity, scope for progress and learning and also offers the chance to meet new friends with a common interest.

Ruth Seodi, author of 'Time To Play A Musical Instrument’ gives some guidance on choosing and taking up a musical instrument later in life and how to develop it into a rewarding hobby
