Lockdown life
When lockdown was announced, chef John Burton-Race and son, Pip (15) wasted no time digging a vegetable garden out of a disused chicken run on their remote Devon farm.

With the nearest shops miles away, long drives to buy groceries and queuing posed a particular problem.

John had been sent home in January from Vietnam (before we had even heard of Coronavirus in the UK) where he had been cooking at a beach resort for the season. Like his peers in the hospitality industry, he suddenly found he had plenty of time on his hands.

Four months later, and as well as a flourishing vegetable, fruit and herb garden, a brand-new book has emerged, co-authored by father and son and designed to inspire others to ‘grow and cook your own food on a budget’. Whether you have a piece of land, a garden border or a window box there is inspiration and use in this book for all.

Readers can look forward to 80 brand-new recipes by the two-Michelin-starred chef – his first new selection for public consumption in several years – suitable for family meals using the produce grown in his garden. The book includes growing guides, planting calendars and ‘spade-loads ‘of inspiration for others to get outside and do the same.

Four months later and the garden is flourishing. There has been a glut of peas, radish, chillies, courgettes, you name it. Elderflower cordial has been bottled, cucumber and dill have been pickled, preserved and stored for the winter. Father and son have brought in 10,000 bees and hives, soon there will be honey.

John Burton-Race says: “This is a very personal book about my reality since Coronavirus happened and what I did to deal with my life being turned upside down. In that respect, it is a book about optimism.

It’s also a very practical book complete with growing guides and useful tips and of course, the delicious new recipes created with the produce Pip and I have grown.
