Visit Austin and Austin City Limits Live Sponsor AmericanaFest UK 2020

Visit Austin and ACL Live are sponsoring AmericanaFest UK, The Americana Music Association UK’s annual festival. Now in its 5th year, the festival comprises a conference, artist showcases and awards ceremony, located in multiple venues across Hackney, London

Julie Chase, VP and CMO of Visit Austin commented, ‘We are delighted to be a part of AmericanaFest UK 2020. It’s such a natural fit for us a Live Music Capital of the World® and we have the pleasure of being in partnership for this project with ACL Live, one of Austin’s premier live music venues and The House of Songs which invites songwriters from around the world to the United States to share the universal language of music. This year’s connection with the Clash and Texas musicians presented the ideal opportunity to collaborate with AmericanaFest UK.’

Stevie Freeman, CEO of Americana Music Association UK commented, ‘It’s so befitting for us to be partnered with Austin – not just that the city is a mecca for Americana artists and songwriters but because our event is in Hackney which is twinned with Austin! We are truly grateful for the support and look forward to forging long-lasting friendships and collaborations with this amazing city.

AmericanaFest UK – Hackney, London 27th – 30th Jan 2020

With the theme of 2020’s event being ‘Collaboration & Cross-Pollination’, AMA-UK will launch the week with a show celebrating the historic musical connection between Texas and the UK, forged when The Clash met Texan Joe Ely in London in the late seventies. This meeting of worlds led The Clash increasingly to explore musical forms we would now consider ‘Americana’ (rockabilly, soul, funk, even nascent hip-hop) and incorporate them with their unique London brand of punk.

The event is timed to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the release of The Clash’s most celebrated album ‘London Calling’ and also Joe Ely’s Live Shots recorded live in London with The Clash in attendance. Proceeds raised from the show will benefit two charitable organisations: The Joe Strummer Foundation, and a charity local to Hackney (TBC) – to honour the community who have hosted AMAUK since 2016 and as a reflection of the social consciousness of the music of both artists.

Across 28th – 29th January will be the conference which is the cornerstone of AmericanaFest UK. The AMA-UK Conference is packed full of panels, conversation, presentations and the chance to meet up with music industry peers who travel from all over the world to contribute to what really is quickly becoming an amazing community of like-minded Americana artists, managers, bookers, promoters, broadcasters, musicians, independent labels and fans.

Wednesday 29th January, Austin locals, The House of Songs will be hosting a special showcase at Night Tales in Hackney, featuring live performances from emerging talents such as Dylan Earl, Judy Blank, Danni Nicholls and Our Man in the Field. Through their Songwriter Summits, The House of Songs brings together musicians from Texas, Bentonville and international countries to live and work together in songwriter camps; collaborating on new works, performing and recording materials to be presented at international songwriter festivals.

AMA-UK 2020 will culminate in an awards ceremony, Thursday, 30th January at the Troxy in East London. There will be live music performances alongside the presentation of the 2020 awards for best album, song, breakthrough performance, trailblazer and lifetime achievement which Joan Armatrading will be receiving.

To celebrate, Visit Austin is running a competition to win a holiday to Austin, in association with Norwegian and ACL Live. One lucky runner up will also win a pair of tickets to the House of Songs Showcase in Hackney 29 January.
