Lamezia Islington Toasts Organic September with Emerging Organic Wines from Calabria

This Organic September, owner at Lamezia, Maria Dell’aquilla, has partnered with her family-run winery, Dell’Aquila DOC, in the Ciro region of Calabria – and her place of birth – to bring organic and natural wines to guests from September 1st onwards

Maria has curated a selection of natural, boutique wines from the Cirò – a wild, sea-flanked corner of Calabria and one of southern Italy’s most exciting natural wine-producing regions.

Situated in the eastern foothills of the rugged La Sila region – tucked away in the arch of Italy’s boot – a resurgence in organic and natural wine production here has been coined the ‘Cirò Revolution’. The region is now home to a clutch of trailblazing young producers who, following strict organic protocol, have begun to transform indigenous grape varieties such as the Gaglioppo – once eschewed for its tannic rusticity – into supple, elegant organic wines.

Maria begins her exploration of natural and organic wines this September starting with Dell’Aquila wines suitable for pairing with starters, fish, meat and desserts currently featured on the menu.

About Maria Dell’aquila, owner at Lamezia Italian Restaurant

Restaurant owner Maria Dell’aquila (29) took over the running of Lamezia from her parents in April this year a decade after they first opened the doors in 2009.

Under her tenure, both interiors and menus have evolved into Maria’s vision of ‘Progressive Italian’ albeit with Calabrian heart, soul and characteristic Italian humour. Feminine touches, from the whimsical flower wall to cushioned banquettes in bright fabrics and a judicious addition of bric-a-brac here and there reimagine the classic trattoria for today’s diner.

On the menu, hemp- and turmeric-based sourdough pizzas, vegan and gluten-free fresh pasta options and seasonally-changing Calabrian-inspired ingredients demonstrate the sort of nutritionally-forward thinking from this power-house of a restaurateur and young mum of two children (ages 2 and six-months). The forthcoming addition of natural and organic wines forms part of Maria’s ethos to serve guests a menu that is both sustainable and nutritionally forward-thinking wherever possible.

Note to lovers of the classics: Favourites, like the 36-hour fermented sourdough N’duja pizza, created by Maria’s Papa in 2009 – and London’s first, along with spaghetti Bolognese, carbonara and Maria’s Mamma’s homemade tiramisu, limoncello and chocolate liqueur have remained firm fixtures on the menu since day one.

Under Maria’s new management, Lamezia has received acclaim from both the London and national press. Described as having some of the best pizza in the British Isles by Olive Magazine (August 2019) as well as the best kids’ menu according to Little London Magazine (June 2019) Lamezia was also short-listed for this year’s British Restaurant Awards. Now celebrating ten years, Lamezia has consistently chalked up a score of at least 4.5 out of 5 for food, service and ambience from thousands of genuine diners on TripAdvisor since 2009.
