Lamezia Fresh Pasta & Pizza Restaurant, Islington

London’s first Hemp Pizza is now available at Lamezia Fresh Pasta & Pizza Restaurant, Holloway Road. Along with the brand new turmeric one, too!

Holloway Road’s first fresh pasta & pizza restaurant is celebrating its 10 year anniversary with the signature flair, originality and authenticity its Calabrian family owners are known for. (The restaurant was the first to introduce Londoners to the ‘nduja pizza ten years ago).

Progressive Italian

Maria Dell’aquila, (29) daughter of the original founders takes over the running of the restaurant from her parents this April 2019.

Describing her new menus as, ‘Progressive Italian’ the original Calabrian menu is now woven through with Maria’s own inspired addition of nutritionally forward components such as hemp and turmeric as well as delicious vegan, gluten- and dairy-free cheese, pasta and pizza items.

Along with Maria’s new hemp pizza, other exciting spring and summer additions include a turmeric pizza and a colourful array of fresh pasta plates (including gluten-free and vegan ones).

Originale & Artigianale

Lamezia’s hemp pizza is not the first ground-breaking dish to come out of Lamezia.

The ‘nduja pizza – now a firm favourite across all London – was first created at Lamezia almost ten years ago when Maria’s father, Franco, who would spread the spicy pork salami, Calabrian-style, onto bread for a quick snack, saw a delicious opportunity to use it as a moreish topping for a warm bruschetta and a pizza. It went on the menu at Lamezia in 2010, years before the rest of London caught on, and has been a best-seller ever since.

Calabrian Roots

Born in Lamezia, a city in the beautiful southern Italian region of Calabria, Maria Dell’aquila arrived in London with her parents, 21 years ago, age 7. Since opening the family business in 2009 she and her parents have been quietly creating and serving Calabrian dishes, using traceable Calabrian ingredients, for their customers in Islington.

About Maria Dell’aquila

Maria says: “As a restaurateur and mother of two, with my second born just a few weeks ago, I am focused on delivering nutritionally sound dishes with Calabrian heart and soul.

Hemp is a fantastic ingredient: rich in healthy fats and essential fatty acids as well as a great source of protein and high amounts of Vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulphur, calcium, iron and zinc. But it also looks amazing on the plate and the popping green colour gives an idea of the fun we like to have with food. Pizza has come a long way since we opened in 2009 and I am excited to showcase our evolved selection.

I am immensely proud of what my parents have created here on Holloway Road and after ten years working for them, I am excited and ready to take the helm and bring some of my ideas into play. Our food will always pay homage to Lamezia, the beautiful city in Calabria we come from, but I am planning on us being here for a second decade so have added some very contemporary touches to the menu and interiors.

One thing that won’t be changing is the service. Our restaurant in one of the longest established on Holloway Road, we have seen many others come and go but I am convinced it’s because of the genuine Italian service, our sense of humour and my parents’ ability to make customers feel like they’re stepping into their own home that we have stood the test of time, are still here and ready for the NEXT decade

The Interiors

Paying homage to her parents and the legacy left to her, Maria Dell’aquila has chosen this summer’s trending colour palette for her interiors – soothing pinkish terracotta walls create a warm, inviting space. Family photographs and ‘objets’ brought over from the southern Italian city of Lamezia are dotted around shelves and walls creating a sense of pride and place. The whole effect speaks to the original Italian trattoria.

The family’s great sense of humour comes through in touches such as candles placed whimsically in Chianti bottles – a nod to the past but also a genuine delight to see when all lit at night. In spring, tables and chairs on the pavement outside will allow for alfresco lunches and dining or simply a mid-morning cup of Italian coffee.
