Enjoy a sparkling summer with Pongrácz

Peter Morrell discovers an exceptional award-winning South African Méthode Cap Classique Sparkling Wine, Pongrácz

I have recently been drinking an outstanding South African wine, Pongrácz Brut. This sparkler is made using the Cap Classique or traditional method. The wine is made with a blend of two grape varieties, 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. Once bottled it’s left on the lees to allow it to develop its strong toasty flavours.

The wine has a bright golden colour with a slight green tinge, the bubbles are lively and persist at the top of the glass.

In the bouquet there are distinct green apple and yeasty brioche aromas. On the palate these are joined by the ripe fruit flavours of the chardonnay with notes of summer soft fruits supplied by the pinot noir. The plentiful bubbles give the wine a very satisfying mouth-feel. The long finish is uplifting and laden with fruit.

Overall this is an elegant wine with intriguing layers of complexity. The crisp, well-balanced acidity makes it ideal as a pre-dinner aperitif or a worthy companion to fish, seafood, goat’s cheese and salads.

An appealing option for those who prefer Rosé wines is the Pongrácz Rosé. This is as elegant as it is stylish, and is a delight to the palate as much as the eye. The salmon pink hue evokes air of romance, with dancing bubbles of delicate strawberry tones and brioche notes. On the palate, it is beautifully balanced with clean acidity and juicy blackberry fruit.

Pongrácz Rosé is the perfect summer aperitif, best enjoyed in the company of others. The Rosé lends itself well to rich dishes like mushroom & truffle risotto. An exciting change from a traditional Brut, those with a sweet tooth can enjoy a glass with a sumptuous Pavlova, topped with fresh raspberries and strawberries.
