‘Gosnells Upstairs At Coal Rooms’

A New Honey-Focused Bar In Peckham Rye

Gosnells Upstairs At Coal Rooms is the buzzing new honey-focused bar for Gosnells, London’s only Meadery, offering small plates from Coal Rooms.

Located in the old ticket office of Peckham Rye station, Gosnells will partner with the inspirational, contemporary cooking of Coal Rooms, housed downstairs.

Launching on 8th March 2019, the new ‘Gosnells Upstairs at Coal Rooms’ will focus on Gosnells’ ferments, including their ‘Original’ and ‘Vintage’ meads, with an ever-changing roster of experimentals including pink hibiscus, salted, hopped, barrel-aged, gooseberry and non-alcoholic etc.

Meads will be served by bar staff either singly or as a flight of four or five. These will be available without pre-booking.

There’ll also be a jaw-dropping cocktail list, centred on the multiplicity of flavours possible from honey; and these will be accompanied by a weekly selection of dishes, cooked by Coal Rooms restaurant downstairs.

The ‘Upstairs’ bar area will have 40 covers, available for drinks and waspish light bites of unabashed wonderment such as: ‘Peckham Fatboy potatoes, Ogleshild cheese from Somerset, beef fat mayo, crispy onions; Cobble Lane kabano sausage; smoked pigs’ head-blood pudding with apple ketchup; or bone marrow & marmite bread and butter pudding.

Tom Gosnell will be using this new space for a variety of honey and bee-based activities:

  • Mead Masterclasses will demo a selection of meads from around the world;
  • Flying Mead Makers will showcase Tom’s favourite and most inspirational US Mead makers;
  • Mead-Paired Suppers will pair with Coal Rooms seasonal foods;
  • Mead Cocktail evenings – will be just that
  • A Journey through Honey will see Tom Gosnell provide a detailed tasting of Gosnells key products and the honeys they come from
  • Bee to Bottle will see Tom and apiarists celebrate that wonderful creature, the bee.
  • And Iced Mead Cocktails will temper the heat of summer.

Tours of the Gosnells Meadery will be on every Saturday at 1pm, priced at £15 for 1.5 hours including a tasting flight back at The Upstairs.

Opening Hours for Upstairs at Coal Rooms will be 5-10pm Wednesday & Thursday; 4-10pm Friday; 12-10pm Saturday.

Tom Gosnell comments:

This is an exciting moment for us, the chance to demonstrate our meads in the heart of Peckham alongside great British dishes. Why have a glass of 12-15% wine when you can gain even greater elegance and just as much flavour from our 5.5% Original Mead. It is a great paired with vegetarian foods, fish, pork and lamb; and if you want to ramp up towards a partner for chargrilled beef, then our Gosnells Vintage London Mead at 12% gives you even more flavour than a big-muscled Australian Shiraz and is just as complex.

We are really putting Mead on the map nationally, and we want to show the amazing range of flavours, textures and alcoholic strengths made possible by beautiful and ecologically significant bees.”

About Gosnells

Gosnells was founded in Peckham in 2014 by Tom Gosnell after a tour of the USA, during which he became fascinated by the way that mead was being reinterpreted as a high value, highly crafted beverage with none of its historic, semi-monastic trappings.

Gosnells now produces its pale, white wine coloured Gosnells Original Mead at 5.5%, made with Valencian orange grove honey; a 12% London Vintage mead, made with East London honeys; and an array of monthly meads and prototypes, so as to reach out to new markets and help push mead into totally new territory, bringing a hip US vibe to south London and causing a commotion on the London drinking scene
