Here Comes Summer

Peter Morrell recommends four light wines that are ideal for drinking in the warm weather

With the BBQ season approaching and the prospect of lazy afternoons in the garden our thoughts turn to the wines we will choose to make these occasions even more enjoyable.

Here are four sumptuous suggestions you might like to try. The two white wines are both worthy alternatives to sauvignon blanc and the rosé is in vogue as it’s rumoured that Harry and Meghan shared a bottle of rosé on their first date

Louis Jadot Beaujolais Villages 2016 – France

This wine is brimming with juicy cherry and raspberry fruit notes, and light tannins. For something different try it lightly chilled – the ‘new pink’.

Available from Tesco, Wine Rack, Whole Foods, Ellies Cellar, The Vineyard and Fenwick with an RRP of £11.70

Editor’s notes: This is a light playful wine made with 100% gamay grape and with an ABV of 12.5% you will wake up fresh next morning. Look out for hints of spice and rose petals on the palate. Match this wine with BBQ meats and charcuterie.

Zalze Bush Vine Chenin Blanc 2017 -South Africa

A dry, zesty Chenin with a succulent palate of crisp pear and tropical pineapple with more vibrant guava notes that jump out of the glass. A great match to summer picnics!

Available from Waitrose, Morrisons and Asda with an RRP of £10.00

Editor’s notes: The popularity of Chenin blanc just keeps growing and the best examples, like this wine, are produced in South Africa. Strong citrus notes with balanced acidity and minerality make it a very refreshing wine which leaves a good fruity uplifting finish. Drink this with fish and seafood for the perfect summer treat.

Your might also like to try these two wines, verdelho is a relatively unknown grape that is rapidly gaining popularity and the rosé is from the very well respected NZ producer Villa Maria.

Esk Valley Verdelho 2017 – New Zealand

This wine exhibits the exotic flavours and aromas of peach, passionfruit and mandarin. It is the perfect partner to fish or oriental food and a great summer evening wine.

Available from Campbell Moore, Dalling & Co, The Wine Reserve, Banstead Vintners, Hedonism and Shenfield Wine Company with an RRP of £13.75

Villa Maria Rosé 2017 – New Zealand

Please NB this will be on shelf from June 2018

Perfect for al fresco enjoyment, with a fragrant bouquet of fresh lime-blossom, strawberry and guava notes. Crisp, dry, lively and rich, a multi-faceted rosé.
