Almost time to enjoy these beautiful Spring aromatic wines

Peter Morrell chooses a range on whites that are ideal warm weather tipples

Given this year’s never ending winter it may seem a little strange thinking about warm weather wines. But with Spring literally just around the corner which brings with it thoughts of lazy afternoons spent with friends now is exactly the right time to seek out some aromatic aces.

Here is a list of suggestions

Cune Barrel Fermented Blanco 2016

A reminder of how good white Rioja can be – 100% Viura with fresh citrus flavours and toasty richness. Transport yourself to the Spanish sun pairing this with delicious fish or shellfish.

Available from Co-op, Sissinghurst Wines, Ellies Cellar, Winestore Distribution, Aitken Wines and B J R Hanby with an RRP of £10.15

My Tasting Notes: This single varietal wine made from the Viura grape is elegantly oaked with a well-structured roundness that gives it an almost creamy texture. There are good fruit flavours on the palate with an unmistakable thread of citrus that gives it an uplifting freshness. Drink this with salads and quiches during a light lunch or on its own as an aperitif

Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection Chenin Blanc 2017

A rich Chenin with a gently tropical nose of honeysuckle, guava and pineapple with fresh green apple and quince. The palate is dry yet rich with tropical fruits and subtle oak and the acidity keeps it all fresh and balanced. Pair this elegant wine with goat’s cheese or smoked fish for a great spring match.

Available from Roberts & Speight, Mitchells Vintners, Fenwick and Vino Wineswith an RRP of £10.60

My Tasting Notes: If there was ever going to be a successor to sauvignon blanc then the chenin blanc grape has got to be the number one contender. This 100% chenin blanc from South Africa is a fine example. The wine has been barrel fermented in old oak which gives it a good backbone. On the nose there are tropical fruit aromas with hints of oaky vanilla. On the palate it has good body and the tropical flavours persist, the lively acidity makes the wine very refreshing and the finish is fruitily persistent. Drink this with smoked fish and charcuterie.

Villa Maria Cellar Selection Sauvignon Blanc 2017

A pure expression of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc bursting with aromas of passionfruit, melon, nettles and fresh herbs. The palate is powerful and juicy, displaying vibrant grapefruit notes. Rustle up some salmon and salads to go with the wine for a delicious spring supper.

Available from Majestic Wine, Margiotta, Village Wines, Holborns, North and South Wines, Hoults Wine Merchants, Hailsham Cellars and www.nzhouseofwine.co.uk with an RRP of £13.85

Left Field Albarino 2017

This wine encompasses spring with gorgeous little citrus flowers linking arms with melon and peach to dance in the sunshine, always maintaining an air of class. Meanwhile lime lingers in the shadows vying for attention.

Available from Wine Rack, Cambridge Wine Merchants, Vino Wines, Taurus Wines, Sissinghurst Wines, Campbell Moore and www.nzhouseofwine.co.uk with an RRP of £14.55

My Tasting Notes: The darling of white wines from Spain and Portugal is made with the highly popular albarino grape. It has now made it to New Zealand and this is a good example of the great job the vintners are doing in producing a fresh and aromatic wine. Part of the wine has been fermented is small oak barrels which gives it light oaked for body. This has got zesty hints of lime in amongst ripe soft fruit and the good acidity makes it very refreshing. Drink this with fresh seafood like lobster, scallops and prawns

Jean-Luc Colombo Collines de Laure Blanc 2016

This is a lovely fusion of regions where the Provençal grape Rolle (aka Vermentino) joins three Rhône varieties in a textured, weighty yet elegant white. Fresh and rounded, this wine has hints of fennel, white peach and pear, and is an excellent match for a spring spread with grilled white meats.

Available from Dalling & Co Wines, R Campbell and Sons, The Solent Cellar, Apero Wine Services and B J R Hanby with an RRP of £14.20

Hancock & Hancock Fiano 2017

This Fiano carries tropical aromas of nectarine and preserved lemon with a dry and fresh palate. It is great as an aperitif on a spring evening or accompaniment to Asian cuisine, spicy dishes or seafood.

Available from Luvians Bottleshop, The Wine Reserve, Vino Wines and Wine Utopia with an RRP of £14.80
