It wouldn’t be Christmas without Warninks

Peter Morrell gets an uplifting reminder of Christmas as a child

Retro cocktails have had a big revival and Warninks Advocaat is back as a firm Christmas favourite. As a child a visiting relative who joined us for the festivities would always bring a bottle to make Snowballs, probably the first cocktail I had ever seen. A crafty sip as a pre-teen was like nectar. In the 1960s it was promoted with the slogan ‘Eveninks and morninks I drink Warninks’ but its history stretches back to the 17th century. Advocaat is the Dutch word for lawyer and the blend of egg yolk, spirits and other flavourings was thought to be good for the throats of public speakers.

Fast forward nearly 50 years and the Snowball is just as good as I remember it. I’ve been running a few pre-Christmas trials and re-creating the taste of the 60s by making a traditional Snowball. Here is the recipe:

The Original Snowball

  • 50ml Warninks Advocaat
  • Lemonade or Soda
  • 0.25ml Fresh Lime juice/ Lime Cordial

  1. Shake the Advocaat and lime juice or lime cordial together.
  2. Pour into a highball filled with ice.
  3. Top up with lemonade or soda.
  4. You can also add a sprinkle of cinnamon and garnish with a glacé cherry.

Pairs perfectly with mince pies and Christmas pudding

Warninks Advocaat is available All major supermarkets in the UK, RRP: £12, ABV 17.2%, 70cl
