Unico Gelato & Caffe Comes to London

Unico Gelato & Caffe, the Italian delicatessen specialising in gelato, coffee, cakes and pastries, has recently opened its doors to the people of West London, in Notting Hill, adding to its two current sites.

Linked with one of the most famous Gelato shops in Bologna, Cremeria Funivia, Unico uses the great Italian culinary traditions and historic recipes of its hometown to bring a true taste of Italian Gelato to London, using the best products on the market, without artificial preservatives, colourings or flavourings.

Managed by childhood friends Andrea Vitali, Lorenzo Forin, Enrico Zecchini and Andrea Tonelli, and mentored by Cremeria Funivia’s founder Leonardo Ragazzi, Unico currently has sites in Notting Hill, Fulham and Bromley, each managed by one of the founding team, with sites due to open in St John’s Wood and Holland Park in 2018. Unico offers a variety of quintessentially Italian goods, including its signature gelato, coffee, pastries and cakes, as well as savoury snacks and hot food, including organic paninis, tigella, and mortadella. They also have vegan options in all areas, from gelato to cakes, sandwiches to hot food.

Their smooth, creamy gelato flavours include Italian signatures such as Pistachio and Hazelnut as well as indulgent ‘Gourmet Gelato’ flavours, such as Cremino (Hazelnut infused with white chocolate and cream), Due torri (Mascarpone custard and marsala wine, served with the hazelnut and chocolate sauce) and a Notting Hill special of Fior di Bufala (Buffalo Mozzarella with a drizzle of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena IGP). In addition to these, they also offer vegan gelato options, including Strawberry, Lemon, and Dark Chocolate, so there is something for all diets. The gelato is made fresh on-site every day and is served in cones or tubs, or there’s the option to take it away to eat at home in their larger tubs.

As well as their gelato selection, they also offer a selection of delicious pastries and cakes to devour alongside expertly made coffee, and Italian style sandwiches called ‘bubbles’ – spherical, savoury doughnuts filled with fillings hailing from different areas of Italy, such as the Parma (Parma Ham & Mozzarella D.O.P.), Napoli (Aubergine Parmigiana), Cortina (Speck [smoked ham] & Asiago Cheese) and Verona (Spinach & Ricotta Cheese).

On top of their food options, they also offer quintessential Italian coffee and deliciously thick, creamy hot chocolate, perfect for warming up during the winter months.

Unico also offer private parties, including children’s birthday parties in store, and catering for private functions elsewhere. The excellent quality produce on offer, alongside the stylishly modern, brightly lit and pastel hued interiors, make Unico an exciting addition to the Italian food scene in London.

Unico Gelato & Caffe

Unico’s story is closely linked with one of the most famous Gelato shops in Bologna (Italy), the historic Cremeria Funivia. Cremeria Funivia first opened their handcrafted gelato store in 2001 in Bologna, a city renowned for the production of gourmet gelato. Founded by Leonardo Ragazzi, whose lifelong passion has seen him create an extraordinary quality gelato, Cremeria Funivia is now one of the most well respected shops in Bologna. In 2012 Leonardo Ragazzi met Gianluca Vitali and Elena Manfroni, two renowned Bolognese entrepreneurs. It soon became apparent that all three shared a passion for Gelato and subsequently created Unico. Other investors and core members of the company include Francesco Vita, and football legends Gianfranco Zola and Roberto di Matteo.
