Glen Scotia presents single malt Scotch whiskies for Christmas 2017

Peter Morrell tastes one of these heart warmers from the distilling regions of Campbeltown

Glen Scotia have got three expressions of their whisky available this Christmas and I recently sampled the Double Cask. The whisky is matured in first-fill bourbon barrels before being finished in Pedro-Ximenez sherry casks, this dual maturation process that gives the whisky a lot of depth and character.

This is a sweet whisky with hints of smoke in the background. There are spicy and honeyed aromas in the bouquet which are reminiscent of an old sweet shop. The whisky is very smooth on the palate with a host of complex flavours. There is caramel and fudge together with dried fruit, malt, oaky vanilla notes and the tang of the sea. In many ways I felt that the finish was the most intriguing. It was comforting and warm with a good level of persistence.

In all an excellent whisky that I would love to receive as a Christmas gift, it’s also remarkable value at £36.00 a bottle.
