London’s Leicester Square shines bright this Christmas

The West End’s home of entertainment presents a packed festive programme

London’s iconic Leicester Square will be buzzing this festive season, with a spectacular programme of yuletide events, special Christmas pop ups, film premieres and, for the first time ever, an abundance of star-shaped Christmas lights.

From November 10th 2017 to January 6th 2018, the ultimate festive pop-up, “Christmas in Leicester Square” will feature an atmospheric European-style Christmas Market, a Santa’s Grotto; plus, an exhilarating line up of shows with comedy, cabaret and burlesque for the adults and discos plus Dahl-esque shows for the kids – all performed in a beautiful Belgian Spiegeltent in the Square’s central gardens.

Alongside the festive pop up and dazzling Christmas lights, the flagship shops, bars, restaurants, entertainment hotspots and hotels – which have been pulling in the crowds since 1670 – will be making the most of their 24/7 appeal with a frenzy of festive specials.

Leicester Square is the ideal spot for some blockbuster retail therapy. From browsing the kitsch and bright packaging of all things Japanese at the recently opened Japan Centre; to being immersed at the world’s largest Lego store – the Square’s shops are a real Christmas list ticker. For chocoholics there’s the chance to fill the Christmas stocking with a selection of treats from the world’s largest wall of chocolate at the M&Ms store and there are London knick-knacks galore to be found in the many souvenir shops.

For a mouth-watering lunchtime refuel, a visit to the Japan Centre’s new sushi and tempura offering is a must, plus there’s fun to be had at the DIY MOD Pizza joint, where hungry shoppers can enjoy a pizza or salad and dessert for just £10. Thai fans will love Busaba’s, special Kristmas menu and there is also plenty of festive fun to be had at the Rainforest Café and Planet Hollywood.

Alternatively, visitors can experience the fabulous bespoke packages at the Square’s latest hangouts. These include Randall & Aubin’s ‘Petit Bistro’ at the new Victory House Hotel; cocktails and dinner for the cool crowd at the all-new and uber-stylish bar at W-hotel; plus the festive pop up at the Hampshire Hotel’s new bar.

As night falls and the new Christmas lights dazzle, Leicester Square’s entertainment options will leave visitors spoilt for choice. As well as film premieres at the movie world’s flagship cinemas such as ODEON, VUE West End and Picturehouse Central’s ‘enchanted’ classic film line-up; there’s also the opportunity to take in a performance at the destination’s many theatres including the Prince of Wales Theatre and Harold Pinter Theatre.

There is also a packed programme of laughs at the birthplace of London’s stand-up scene, The Comedy Store. And after the comedy, the Square’s 24-hour venues including the Empire and Hippodrome have special packages to complete the festive party.

After all the fun, there are plenty of options for an overnight stay including a room at the newest kid on the block: Victory House Hotel. Other stylish alternatives include, the W Hotel, Radisson Blu’s Hampshire Hotel, the Firmdale Group’s Haymarket Hotel.
