Get blown away by Chicago Premium Outlets

When the pound has hit a 30 year low against the US dollar, there is only one saving grace for tourists who are intent on shopping when travelling to the United States. Amanda Bernstein reports

Head to the amazing value outlet malls that scatter the width and breadth of the country. They make shopping seriously good fun and make for a great day out. And if you time your shopping trip when there is a US holiday, you can catch the greatest savings, with discounts that will quite literally let you throw caution to the wind.

Amanda Bernstein discovered the benefits of outlet shopping on a recent visit to the Windy City. Chicago Premium Outlets is located southwest of downtown, in the quiet suburb of Aurora, about a 50-minute drive outside of central Chicago. It is well worth the day out as most the designer stores offer great savings, including Armani, Brooks Brothers, DKNY, Polo Ralph Lauren, Kate Spade and Samsonite, to name just a few.

There are also plenty of sports stores selling merchandise with considerable reductions, such as Nike, Columbia Sportswear and Adidas, with many items having originally been sold at full price in their sister stores on Michigan Avenue in the heart of the city.

Look below at our ‘top tips’ for successful discount shopping:

Make a list of what you are looking for

For ladies, if it is an evening dress you are after, just look out for that. Buying items because they are a bargain is just an expensive waste of money unless you actually need the item.

Choose your company

Be sure you are accompanied with a friend or family member whose advice you respect. Not someone who will tell you that you look great in an outfit even if you don’t, just to get you to buy something quickly so you can leave! Go with someone who will tell you the truth.

Wear comfortable clothes

Shopping for bargains is time-consuming, tiring and fun. Be sure to dress appropriately in comfortable clothing with well-fitting underwear. For the girls, take a pair of heels with you – you may need to check the length of a dress or a pair of trousers.

A process of elimination

Be sure you know what type of styles, colours and shapes suit you. It is really frustrating looking at everything on the rails. Once you know what looks good on you, it’s easy to glance around the shop and to spot if there is something for you or not. Knowing which shapes, styles and colours work for you will save you a lot of time.

Know your budget

Decide how much you are able to spend on the day or for a particular outfit or garment – then keep to that amount. If you splurge and then regret it later, your ‘discount shopping’ experience will end up costing you a fortune. The reduced labels are used to entice you to spend by showing you the original price. So keep to your budget to ensure that you are really saving.

Have fun!

Shopping is enjoyable and should be a fun experience. By purchasing items you need, you will get to enjoy wearing them, rather than having them lie in your wardrobe. And you will always be reminded of the great trip you had!
