One of Canada’s leading contemporary artists, Charles Pachter is a painter, printmaker, sculptor, designer, historian, and lecturer. He was born in Toronto and holds degrees from the University of Toronto, the Sorbonne, and the Cranbrook Academy of Art in the USA. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, a Chevalier of France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, a member of the Order of Ontario, and a recipient of the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals. He has received honorary doctorates from Brock University, OCAD University, and the University of Toronto, where he is a Senior Fellow at Massey College. His paintings hang in public and private collections around the world. Those of the Queen, moose, and maple leaf flag are pop icons of Canadian art that celebrate Canada’s cultural heritage with wit and whimsy. Retrospective Pachter exhibitions have toured France, Germany, Japan, and India.

In a bold series of paintings produced over the last three decades, Pachter has examined and re-interpreted the late 18th century historical context of the politics of loyalism to Great Britain in North America and the new society it spawned.

This exhibition will feature some of Pachter’s best known paintings that explore and interpret the Loyalist Decade from 1783-1793, and will include portraits of Ontario’s first Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe and his wife, the brilliant diarist Elizabeth Posthuma Gwillim Simcoe.

Later works will be chosen from his series on the War of 1812 and the First World War. The exhibition will also include Pachter’s renowned painting of the Queen riding a moose (Canada’s Monarch of the North), one of Canada’s most beloved contemporary pop art images. This will be his first solo exhibition in London.

Currently Charles Pachter is the artist in residence at The Trafalgar Hotel in London. Charles will lead a pop up painting event at the hotel on 15 September 2016. A selection of Charles’ most famous artwork will be displayed at the Trafalgar from 19 August until 31 Octobert 2016. Following his exhibition at the Charterhouse the hotel will also display four pieces exclusively before the full collections goes off to Lady Margaret Hall at Oxford University.
