Spring into Summer with Aldi Wines

Peter Morrell has been sampling some wines for the warmer weather from the wide range on offer

With the hope that the rain clouds will roll back soon allowing the sun to put in an appearance our thoughts are turning to languid afternoon lunch parties featuring salads and seafood and boisterous barbecues with sizzling steaks and sausages.

To help all these social occasions go with a swing I’ve been taking a look at some of the wines in the Aldi range that are good for Summer drinking. Here are three good value examples

Australian Chardonnay 2014 from the Exquisite Range – £5.79 a bottle

For those of you that remember Oz Chardonnay as heavy and over-oaked this wine will come as a very pleasant surprise. It’s unoaked, much lighter and is European in style. There are delicate notes of tropical fruit and citrus in the bouquet which develop into more identifiable flavours of peach and pineapple on the palate. The wine has been matured on the lees (yeast sediment) which makes it well structured and refreshing and it leaves a strong floral finish

This would be ideal to pair with fish, seafood or a goat’s cheese salad.

Marlborough, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc 2015 from the Exquisite Range – £7.99 a bottle

This wine hails from Marlborough, the world’s most famous area for Sauvignon Blanc production. The grapes are grown on free draining gravelly soil near the sea, the ideal environment. There are delicious aromas of fruit on the nose which evolve into tropical fruit and nettle flavours shot through with zingy lime. The texture is soft in the mouth which leads to a bright and uplifting finish.

This wine would be a great companion foir lightly spiced food like a Singapore Noodle Salad.

Estevez, Chilean Pinot Noir 2014 – £4.79

This Reserva is produced by the respected Estevez winery in the Central Valley, Chile’s most prolific wine producing area. The bouquet is full of interest showing notes of cherries and ripe strawberries, these are joined in the mouth by spicy red berry flavours. The wine is medium bodied, very smooth and leaves a long and satisfying finish.

Match this wine with grilled chicken, sausages and strong cheeses like Stilton

While talking about Summer drinks here are a couple of beers you may like to try. First up the Land of Liberty, American Style IPA. This beer has a zesty citrus flavour showing hints of tropical grapefruit and a background sweetness. It’s a good example of why this style of IPA has taken the U.S. by storm.

The second is the Rheinbacher Weissbier, this is a cloudy wheat beer from Germany and it exhibits all the characteristics of this style. It has lemony citrus notes with banana flavours and spice tones on the palate and has a slightly sweet finish.
