Terre Blanche in Provence is under a two hour flight away from London but when you arrive you could be in another world. Its 750 acres of grounds offer visitors a wide range of activities but if your holiday objective is to enjoy peace and relaxation then its also the ideal destination.

Some of the people from Terre Blanche were in London recently and I had lunch with them to find out more about the estate and to sample some of the region’s most famous wine, Rosé. We started talking about the history of Terre Blanche, for 20 years it was owned by Sean Connery who in 1999 sold it to German software entrepreneur Dietmar Hopp.

The new owner has transformed the estate into an idyllic hideaway offering two championship golf courses, a luxury spa, infinity pool, world class restaurants, a kid’s club and much more. The accommodation ranges from suites to villas and are all luxuriously appointed.

If you want to get out and about then the surrounding area has numerous attractions. The chic French towns of Cannes, Nice and St Tropez are all under an hour away, a little further afield is the Verdon Gorge, known as the ‘Grand Canyon of Europe’, it’s one of the continent’s great natural wonders and has many hiking and biking trails. Close by is the world capital of perfume, Grasse. Here you can shop for your favourite fragrance or visit the perfume museum.

One of the Provence’s biggest exports is Rosé wine and Château d’Esclans vineyard near Terre Blanche is regarded as one of the best producers. I was lunching with the Terre Blanche people in Covent Garden’s Ivy Market Grill, eating small portions of delicate dishes and Château d’Esclans had sent over four of their wines from France for us to match with the food. Our aperitif was the well known Whispering Angel 2014, highly regarded, it was light and dry giving pleasant citrus notes on the nose with fresh fruit and minerality on the palate and left a crisp finish.

The match for our tomato and burrata combo was Rock Angel 2014, an aromatic floral bouquet developed into more fruity tones on the palate and left a pleasantly astringent finish which countered the cream in the cheese well.

Our tuna tartare on a bed of guacamole was paired with Les Clans 2013, despite weighing in at 14% it had the elegance of a lighter wine. Fruity aromas on the nose morphed into a spicy palate with hints of strawberry, the finish was powerful and persistent.

The final wine accompanied a risotto topped with feta cheese was the Garrus 2013, rated by many wine experts as the world’s greatest Rosé. It was a real gem, light and sophisticated with a bouquet of roses and a yeasty palate with good mouth feel. It left a satisfying finish. All four of these wines conjured up the sights, smells and sounds of Provence, they were sunshine in a glass.

Terre Blanche can arrange for guests to visit the vineyard either for a tasting or a full tour.

One of the key features of a stay at Terre Blanche is the cuisine. Under the guidance of Head Chef Philippe Jourdin four restaurant,s each with its own ambiance, serves food from the local area in styles ranging from gourmet sophistication to casual dining.

During their stay keen golfers can improve their game in the Biomecaswing Performance Centre and the spa provides both beauty and health treatments in the state of the art facility.

This is the ideal destination for couples, families with children and multi-generational groups. There is a versatile range of accommodation and activities available for people of all ages You will really think that you have been to another world.
