CVNE wines bring sunshine to these dull winter days

Here are a couple of elegant wines from the Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España. They are a good demonstration of both the classic and contemporary styles being produced by this progressive winery in northern Spain

Cune Reserva Rioja Alta 2009

This red is a great example of the winery’s classic style of winemaking. The grapes used are 85% tempranillo with the balance being made up of garnacha, graciano and mazuelo.

The wine is an intense ruby red, bright and deep in colour. Rich, deep aromas of bramble, red autumn fruit with a hint of balsamic and warm spices from fine oak. The palate is fine, complex and long, with balanced tannins and an excellent bright finish.

Think about pairing this with rare beef and rich, warming casseroles.

Viña Real Reserva Rioja 2009

This wine is representative of the contemporary style of winemaking being used by CVNE. Grapes used are 90% tempranillo, the balance being made up of graciano, garnacha, and mazuelo.

This wine is deep ruby and cherry red with the slightest hint of a terracotta rim. Good intensity on the nose with ripe autumn fruits, warm spices and elegant toasty oak. The palate is rich, warming and velvety with good acidity and fine tannins. The vanilla from the oak is well integrated with the raspberry fruit of the Tempranillo producing a fine, rich complex palate and a long finish. The wine is balanced now but has the potential to further improve.

Good food matches for this wine are roast duck and strong mature cheeses
