The town of Modica is one of the many treasures to be discovered in Sicily. The heart of the Sicilian Baroque Architecture, Modica is stunning and is quite rightly a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A powerhouse in Grecian times, the town remains a superbly atmospheric town with its ancient medieval buildings climbing steeply up either side of a deep gorge that was cut in prehistoric times. A devastating flood in 1902 resulted in the wide avenues of Corso Umberto and Via Giarrantana (the river was dammed and diverted), which remain the main focus of the town, lined by palazzi and tiled stone houses. The extraordinary Chiesa di San Giorgio is a highlight of the town. This church, Gagliardi’s masterpiece, is pure rococo splendour, a butter-coloured confection perched on a majestic 250-step staircase. Its counterpoint is the Cattedrale di San Pietro another impressive church on top of a staircase lined with life-sized statues of the Apostles. Modica is also famous for its confectionary, a legacy of the town’s Spanish dwellers who imported cocoa from their South American colonies. The sweet delicacies – flavoured with cinnamon, vanilla and orange peel are not to be missed.

Modica is not only a beautiful town, but it is also a great location to explore the rest of the area, whether it be more Baroque treasures in Noto, Ibla, and Scicli, or a relaxing day on one of the many lovely sandy beaches along the south coast.

Essential Italy is delighted to offer two new beautiful properties, right in the heart of the city.
