Holland and Barrett
Looking after the health of the over 50s

Peter Morrell goes along to a product showcase of this leading health store and is impressed with the number of products on offer for older people

As people age they sometimes need a little more support in terms of vitamins, minerals and herbal remedies to keep them active and feeling fit. I recently met with some of the companies that supply Holland and Barrett with their products to see what was available for the over 50s.

Many people have trouble sleeping and a little help can go a long way. Schwabe Pharma makes a product called Bonuit, which is a mixture of Valerian root extract and Passion Flower. These herbs are traditional remedies for sleeplessness caused by mild anxiety. Another product from Schwabe is Kaloba contains Pelargonium sidoides, a member of the geranium family. Now is important time to stock up on Kaloba as it relieves the symptoms of colds, runny noses and sore throats. Both of these products have been granted the Traditional Herbal Registration (THR) certification mark.

I also took a look at some products from Bioglan. Their Rest & Restore Night Multivitamin for 50+ is a specific blend of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and botanical extracts age adjusted to help fill nutritional gaps beneficial for mature adults to help support an active lifestyle. This will potentially help you with energy production, immune system function, reduction of tiredness and fatigue and protecting cells from oxidative stress. They also make Probiotic Balance to keep your internal flora in peak condition. These tablets are ideal for when you are travelling as they do not need to be kept in the fridge. Finally they produce Red Krill Oil which will give you a very high grade dose of Omega 3.

For people who find swallowing tablets a problem Naturvits have come up with a smart solution, chewable tablets. They can deliver a 100mg COQ10 dose, the enzyme needed by every cell in the body particularly muscles. This supplement is essential for people taking statins which depletes the body’s store of COQ10. Their products are also guaranteed not to cause any unpleasant reflux.

Holland and Barrett also offer their own comprehensive range of supplements. For example there Celery seed capsules for the relief of rheumatic aches and pains, Ginko Balboa for cardio vascular health and Garlic tablets to take as part of a diet to control cholesterol. With the festive season now in sight, Milk Thistle capsules are just the thing after eating or drinking too much.

However not all the products were about health, there was also a little indulgence to be had. The Booja Booja truffles were dairy free, gluten free, vegan, GMO free, raw and soya free so you can be a guilt free chocaholic. I also sampled some of the butters from Nature’s Energy including peanut, pumpkin seed, cashew, almond and hazelnut.

Looking good is as important as feeling good, the aromatherapy and massage products from the beekeepers at Picklecoombe  House were interesting as was the range from my wife’s favourite, Dr Organic, their Snail Gel not only soothes and moisturises but also has anti-aging properties.

So there is plenty of scope for the over 50s to look and feel better with the products available from Holland and Barrett stores nationwide.
